Florence Airport first opened in 1928 and was just an airfield. In 1938 the airfield was enlarged and an asphalt runway was built, by the late 1940s the airport had began civilian passenger flights. In the early 1980s Florence airport was enlarged again and further runways were built and the passenger terminal upgraded. Runways were lengthened further in 1996 and the departure area was enlarged to allow for more passengers. In 1999 the airport was enlarged again.

tionJet CJ1 overran the runway, which caused substantial damage to the aircraft. None of the passengers or crew that were board were harmed in the accident.
On 30th June 1997 an ATR-42-512 operated by Air Littoral over-ran the runway after it approached the runway too fast. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair, one of the crew members was killed in the accident.
